Madness is a recurring theme in Shakespeare’s plays. There are characters who go mad, characters who pretend to go mad, and characters who try to send others mad. Not to mention Shakespeare’s fools, who may seem bonkers but often speak more sense than anyone else. Modern attitudes to mental health, madness and insanity are very different from those of the 16th century, but Shakespeare’s depictions of people in mental torment is often strikingly recognisable.
We have put together a mad, crazy evening of scenes from Shakespeare’s plays on the theme of insanity, Lunatics and Fools. There will be characters you know well, such as Ophelia, Feste and King Lear, alongside some you might not be expecting. So please come and join us. You’ll be surprised, informed, amused, shocked and, above all, entertained.
